Selous, Mikumi and Udzungwa Mountain National Park (Lodge and Tented Camp)
Selous Game Reserve
In 1982, Selous Game Reserve was nominated by the United Nations to become a UNESCO "World Heritage Site" due to its ecology.
From the coast extending to the south of Tanzania, Selous Game Reserve is the biggest reserve in Africa. Selous is larger than the country Denmark! The reserve is in the south of Mikumi, which covers 6% of Tanzania's surface area. It is 4 times the size of the Serengeti.
Selous Game Reserve is one of the famous reserves in Africa with remarkable and splendid wildlife and scenery. The animals seen in the reserve are: sable antelope, hippo, lion, buffalo, rhino and elephant. It also has a large and vibrant birdlife of about 400 species including hammer kop, sunbird, hornbill, fish eagle, bill stork, secretary bird and kingfisher.
Selous Game Reserve is not a heavily explored area in Africa with an untouched forest area. Over 1600 plant species have been discovered in the Selous area. Due to the Selous' thick, inaccessible forest and River Rufiji, it has become the best shelter for all types of animals, birds and reptiles.
The activities that can be enjoyed in Selous are boat riding on Rufiji River, walking safaris and game drives inside the Reserve. It lies 40 minutes by air and approximately 6 hours by road from Dar es Salaam.
Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Rark is one of the greatest parks in the world and the fourth largest park in Tanzania. It is situated approximately 300 km from Dar es Salaam. Mikumi's rich wildlife contains lions, hippos, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalos, wildebeest and many more incredible creatures.
A game drive is one of most popular activities in Mikumi National Park.
The park has an altitude of 548 metres above sea level and an area of 3230 square kilometres. Mikumi is bordered by TAZARA (Tanzania Zambia) railway line in the south along with Selous Game Reserve.
Udzungwa Mountain National Park
Udzungwa Mountain National Park is part of the Eastern Arc Mountain, and is occasionally termed as the "Galapagos Island of Africa", approximately 70 km (1 hour) drive away from Mikumi. Udzungwa covers about 1990 square kilometres in area. The park is renowned for high bio-diversity of plants and birdlife and 30% of these species are not found anywhere else.
Udzungwa originates from the word "Wadzungwa", one of the tribes living on the slopes of the mountain.
The common activities in Udzungwa are bird watching and hiking. The guide and ranger will take you around the mountain and the park to view the eccentric wildlife and birds found in Africa.
